The Real Story About What Ended the Great Depression (Hint: It Wasn’t the New Deal)

My
seventh-grade son recently wrote a U.S. History paper extolling the
virtues of President Franklin Roosevelt’s New Deal. “It ended the Great
Depression,” he wrote with great certainty. He’s only 12 and parroting
what the history texts and his teachers told him.
That’s his excuse. What’s Ken Burns’?
Mr.
Burns’ docudrama on the Roosevelts—for those who weren’t bored to
tears—repeats nearly all the worn-out fairy tales of the FDR presidency,
including what I call the most enduring myth of the 20th century, which
is that FDR’s avalanche of alphabet-soup government programs ended the
Great Depression. Shouldn’t there be a statute of limitations on such
lies?
Ask nearly anyone over the age of 80, and they will say
that FDR cared about the working man and “gave the country hope,” a
point that Mr. Burns emphasizes. Roosevelt exuded empathy, which isn’t a
bad thing—remember Bill Clinton’s memorable line “I feel your
pain”?—but caring doesn’t create jobs or lift gross domestic product.
Nor
does spending government money revive growth, despite the theories put
into practice by the then-dean of all economists, John Maynard Keynes.
Any objective analysis of these facts can lead to no other conclusion.
U.S. unemployment averaged a rate of 18 percent during Roosevelt’s first
eight years in office. In the decade of the 1930s, U.S. industrial
production and national income fell by about almost one-third. In 1940,
after year eight years of the New Deal, unemployment was still averaged a
god-awful 14 percent.
Think of it this way. The unemployment
rate was more than twice as high eight years into the New Deal than it
is today, and American workers now are angry as hornets. Imagine, if
jobs were twice as scarce today, the pitchforked revolt that would be
going on. This is success?
Almost everything FDR did to
jump-start growth retarded it. The rise in the minimum wage kept
unemployment intolerably high. (Are you listening, Nancy Pelosi?)
Roosevelt’s work programs like the Works Progress Administration,
National Recovery Administration and the Agricultural Adjustment
Administration were so bureaucratic as to have minimal impact on jobs.
Raising tax rates to nearly 80 percent on the rich stalled the economy.
Social Security is and always was from the start a Madoff-style Ponzi
scheme that will eventually sink into bankruptcy unless reformed.
The
most alarming story of economic ignorance surrounding this New Deal era
was the tax increases while the economy was faltering. According to
economist Burt Folsom, FDR signed one of the most financially
devastating taxes: “On April 27, 1942, he signed an executive order
taxing all personal income above $25,000 [rich back then] at 100
percent. Congress balked at that idea and later lowered it to 90 percent
at the top level.” The New Dealers completely ignored the lessons of
the 1920s tax cuts, which just a decade before had unfurled an age of
super-growth.
Then there was the spending and debt barrage.
Federal spending catapulted from $4.65 billion in 1933 to nearly $13.7
billion in 1941. This tripling of the federal budget in just eight years
came at a time of almost no inflation (just 13.1 percent cumulative
during that period). Budget surpluses during the prosperous Coolidge
years became ever-larger deficits under FDR’s fiscal reign. During his
first term, more than half the federal budget on average came from
borrowed money.
The cruel irony of the New Deal is that the
liberals’ honorable intentions to help the poor and the unemployed
caused more human suffering than any other set of ideas in the past
century.
What is maddening is that thanks to this historical
fabrication of FDR’s presidency, dutifully repeated by Mr. Burns, we
have repeated the mistakes again and again. Had the history books been
properly written, it’s quite possible we would never had to endure the
catastrophic failure of Obamanomics and the “stimulus plans” that only
stimulated debt. The entire rationale for the Obama economic plan in
2009 was to re-create new New Deal.
Doubly amazing is that at
this very moment, the left is writing another fabricated history — of
the years we have just lived through. The history books are already
painting Obama policies as the just-in-time emergency policies that
prevented a Second Great Depression. I wonder if 80 years from now, the
American people will be as gullible as they are today in believing, as
my 12-year-old does, that FDR was an economic savior.

WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO OBAMA IF HE KILLED YOUR SON?
The parents of Aaron Vaughn of SEAL Team VI said this:

After finally choosing to view the barbaric, on-camera beheading by ISIS of freelance war correspondent James Foley, I have been left with a level of rage known only to those of us who have sacrificed unspeakable offerings on the altar of world peace.
My offering was my only son — Aaron Carson Vaughn. Aaron was a member of SEAL Team VI. He was killed in action when a CH47D Chinook, carrying thirty Americans and eight Afghans was shot down in the Tangi River Valley of Afghanistan on Aug. 6, 2011.
Many times over the past three years, I have been asked what drove my son to choose his particular career. What made him want to be a Navy SEAL? My answer is simple.
Aaron Vaughn was a man who possessed the courage to acknowledge evil. And evil, once truly acknowledged, demands response. Perhaps this is why so few are willing to look it in the eye. It is much simpler — much safer — to look the other way.
That is, unless you are the leader of the Free World.
As Commander-in-Chief, your actions — or lack thereof — Mr. President, cost lives. As you bumble about in your golf cart, slapping on a happy face and fist-pounding your buddies, your cowardly lack of leadership has left a gaping hole — not only in America’s security — but the security of the entire globe. Your message has come across loud and clear, sir: You are not up to this job. You know it. We know it. The world knows it.
Please vacate the people’s house and allow a man or woman of courage and substance to seize the reigns of this out-of-control thug-fest and regain the balance we, America, have provided throughout our great history.
Thanks to your “leadership” from whatever multi-million dollar vacation you happen to be on at any given moment, the world is in chaos. What’s been gained, you’ve lost. What’s been lost, you’ve decimated. You’ve demolished our ability to hold the trust of allies. You’ve made a mockery of the title “President.” And you’ve betrayed the nation for which my son and over 1.3 million others have sacrificed their very lives.
But this should come as no surprise, since your wife uttered a vile statement on Feb. 18, 2008, during the primary campaign — one that speaks volumes of your true convictions. “For the first time in my adult life, I am really proud of my country,” she said.
I am sure my deceased son thanks you for that, Mrs. Obama. Oh, and you’re welcome.
Never in my lifetime have I witnessed such despair and such growing fear that the world’s last best hope, America, has finally been dismantled. Perhaps the better word is transformed — fundamentally transformed. Come to think of it, it’s become difficult — if not impossible — to believe things haven’t gone exactly as you planned, Mr. President.
Amazingly, in five short years, your administration has lurched from one disaster to another. You spearheaded the ambitious rush to end the wars in both Iraq and Afghanistan — with no plan on how to do so effectively. Also, the release of “the Taliban five” in exchange for one American — without consulting Congress — is also on your shoulders.
You have been at the helm during unprecedented national security leaks — including, but not limited to the outing of SEAL Team VI on the Bin laden raid, the outing of the Pakistani doctor who provided the intelligence for that raid, the outing of Afghanistan’s CIA station chief, and the outing of your personal “kill list” to make you look tough. In addition, 75 percent of American deaths in Afghanistan and 83 percent of Americans-wounded-in-action have occurred on your watch, according to icasualties.org.
And now, we have this recent, heinous event: the beheading of an American citizen by a barbaric organization you foolishly referred to as “the JV team” in your statements to the New Yorker magazine in January.
You, sir, are the JV team. It’s time for you to step down and allow a true leader to restore our honor and protect our sons and daughters.
America has always been exceptional. And she will be again. You, Mr. President, are a bump in our road.

Judicial Watch reports that the Department of Justice is giving liberal activist groups money from a $16.6 billion settlement with Bank of America which resulted from the toxic mortgages it acquired from its takeover of Contrywide Home Loans. One would think that the funds would be applied to reducing the deficit. But no! Instead they will be given to Democratic special interest groups.
The groups benefiting from the lawsuit, according to Investor’s Business Daily, are the National Council of La Raza, Operation Hope, National Community Reinvestment Coalition, and Neighborhood Assistance Corporation of America. The money also went to “delinquent borrowers” in Chicago, Oakland, Detroit, Philadelphia and other major “Democrat strongholds.”
“This is a wealth redistribution scheme disguised as a lawsuit,” Tom Fitton, president of Judicial Watch, told The Daily Caller. “And who benefits from the distribution? Interest groups the administration relies on, outside interest groups, allies and politicians in communities trying to benefit as well.”

Jim: "The president's unconstitutional recess appointments in an attempt to circumvent the Senate's advise-and-consent role?"
Bob: "No, the other one."
Jim: "The State Department interfering with an Inspector General investigation on departmental sexual misconduct?"
Bob: "No, the other one."
Jim: "Clinton, the IRS, Clapper and Holder all lying to Congress?"
Bob: "No, the other one."
Jim: "The President using nearly $1 trillion dollars of stimulus money to fund his cronies?"
Bob: "No, the other one"
Jim: "You mean Fast & Furious?"

Jim: "I give up! ... Oh wait, I think I got it! You mean that 65 million low-information voters who don't pay taxes and get free stuff from taxpayers and stuck us again with the most pandering, corrupt administration in American history?"

WHY I VOTE DEMOCRAT
Why I vote Democrat
I vote Democrat because I believe it’s okay if our federal government borrows $85 Billion every single month.
I vote Democrat because I care about the children … but saddling them with trillions of dollars of debt to pay for my bloated leftist government is okay.
I vote Democrat because I believe it’s better to pay billions of dollars to people who hate us rather than drill for our own oil, because it might upset some endangered beetle or gopher.
I vote Democrat because I believe it is okay if liberal activist judges rewrite the Constitution to suit some fringe kooks, who would otherwise never get their agenda past the voters.
I vote Democrat because I believe that corporate America should not be allowed to make profits for themselves or their shareholders. They need to break even and give the rest to the federal government for redistribution.
I vote Democrat because I’m not concerned about millions of babies being aborted, so long as we keep all of the murderers on death row alive.
I vote Democrat because I believe it’s okay if my Nobel Peace Prize winning President uses drones to assassinate people, as long as we don’t use torture.
I vote Democrat because I believe people, who can’t accurately tell us if it will rain on Friday, can predict the polar ice caps will melt away in ten years if I don’t start driving a Chevy Volt.
I vote Democrat because Freedom of Speech is not as important as preventing people from being offended.
I vote Democrat because I believe the oil companies’ profit of 3% on a gallon of gas is obscene, but the federal government taxing that same gallon of gas at 15% isn’t obscene.
I vote Democrat because I believe a moment of silent prayer at the beginning of the school day constitutes government indoctrination and an intrusion on parental authority ….. but sex education, condom distribution and multiculturalism are all values-neutral.
I vote Democrat because I agonize over threats to the natural environment from CO2, acid rain and toxic waste ….. but I am totally oblivious of the threats to our social environment from pornography, promiscuity and family dissolution.
I vote Democrat because I believe lazy, uneducated stoners should have just as big a say in running our country as entrepreneurs who risk everything and work 70 hours per week.
I vote Democrat because I don’t like guns ….. so no one else should be allowed to own one.
I vote Democrat because I see absolutely no correlation between welfare and the rise of illegitimacy.
I vote Democrat because I see absolutely no correlation between judicial leniency and surging crime rates.
I vote Democrat because I believe you don’t need an ID to vote but you do to buy beer.
I vote Democrat because I believe marriage is obsolete, except for homosexuals.
I vote Democrat because I think AIDS is spread by insufficient funding.
I vote Democrat because I think “fairness” is far more important than freedom.
I vote Democrat because I think an “equal outcome” is far more important than equal opportunity.
I vote democrat because I would rather hide in a class room while others fight for my freedom.
I vote democrat because I’m not smart enough to own a gun and I need someone else to protect me.
I vote democrat because I would rather have free stuff than freedom.
And lastly, I vote Democrat because I’m convinced that government programs are the solution to the human condition, NOT freedom.

Let's give the Chinese gov't credit for dealing quickly and decisively with these Muslim thugs. Unfortunately our gov't has no spine, backbone or brains to do the same!

BEIJING – State media say a court in western China has sentenced three people to death for planning a deadly car ramming at Beijing's iconic Tiananmen Gate that was blamed on Muslim separatists.
A car plowed through tourists and ended up in a fiery crash in the Oct. 28 attack in the heart of Beijing, killing two bystanders and the three attackers.
